If you are looking for couches and chairs in my experience I will say that Flexsteel seems to be pretty good, and more impressively they stand behind their stuff. I believe most of their furniture comes with a lifetime guarantee. I do service work for various companies and retailers in the Chicago area and I have had occasions where I’ve gone out to service a Flexsteel item that is at least 10 years old and they still stand behind the item.

Something more important to think about is the retailer that you are buying from. It is a sad fact that most of the furniture manufacturers are now having a good portion of their lines brought in from overseas, China being the biggest country. Henredon, Bernhardt and even Baker have some of their stuff brought in now and the quality is not what it used to be. The main reason I mention that you need to take the retailer into consideration is because it is now becoming the exception, instead of the norm, that you will receive your items in good shape, and that the item doesn’t require a service call, whether it is an issue of delivery damage or manufacturer defect. Many stores out there will claim to have good service, but what you should do is when you find something that you like, do a search on the retailer that you found the item at and see how many complaints they have against them (the retailer) with regards to service and standing behind the item.

In my experience Arhaus Furniture, JC Penneys, and Carson Pirie Scott (Bon-Ton) are all good. I’ve had customers’ that have had issues, especially with regards to service, from places such as Walter E. Smith, Ethan Allan, Macys and others. I would also stay away from the low end like Ashley, there is a reason why in the trade we refer to Ashley as ‘TrAshley’.

Also, most of the retailers will want to sell you an extended warranty, most of the warranties are worthless because what will most likely happen to your item is something that is usually NOT covered.

Brand wise I would say Flexsteel, Sherrill, and Smith Brothers seems to be some of the best built, best quality items out there. You’re going to pay top dollar for their stuff but it will last.

"Forever and a Day"

Darby Scott drove down I-75 in her 1968 red Ford truck with her best friend Kippling Culver in the passenger seat on their way to IKEA. With Beyonce playing on the radio, Darby thought about death. What was it like? Where would she go? Would she come back as Cleopatra or as a tree? Would she come back at all?

"Both hands on the wheel, Scotty," Kippling said, interrupting Darby’s pondering. He grabbed her wrists and took her hands from her lap, placing them on the steering wheel. "We’re going to IKEA, not God’s Sofa Emporium. No more of this swerving off the road stuff or I’m driving."

"Then I would be more inclined to throw myself from the passenger seat," Darby replied, stealing a quick sideways glance at Kippling. She was smiling. Kippling chuckled and placed his left hand at the back of her neck, playing with the wispy brown hair that fell from her messy top-knot.

"14 years of play-dates and I still don’t understand you, Scotty," he said. Darby rolled her dark eyes behind her pink Ray-Ban sunglasses.

"Yeah Kip, because "let’s push Darby in the giant ant mound" is considered a play-date." She was so beautifully sarcastic, such an icy mask behind her sunglasses, but Kippling knew her well enough to know that she couldn’t keep a straight face for very long. Held up his fist and she bumped her own against it. Then he told her,

"You just missed our exit."

Darby and Kippling wandered aimlessly through the many rooms of IKEA arm in arm, taking naps in the beds, flossing their teeth in the bathrooms, and occasionally taking a hint from 500 Days of Summer and wandering into an apartment display pretending like they lived there.

"If you could describe my personality with only one piece of Scandinavian furniture, which one would you pick?"

Standing in the aisle between the mattresses and the Hemnes bedroom display, Kippling mulled over Darby’s question, rolling it around in his mind before answering;

"The Leirvik bed frame." He nodded. "Yeah, definitely the Leirvik. What about me?"

He stopped in the middle of the gray linoleum floor, causing grumbling people to swerve suddenly around him, and spread his arms wide, grinning. Darby studied him.

"The Bastis cat bed," she finally said, and continued to make her way into the next bedroom display, disturbing a lovely family of four by climbing into the bunk-bed and leaving Kippling bewildered by her choice of Scandinavian furniture.

As this is only the first section and this idea is fairly new, the plot really hasn’t developed yet, but it’s not JUST Darby and her friends. Truthfully, I view this as being a teen-high-school story without being a teen-high-school story, if that makes any sense. Almost like it’s focusing on the high school kids that aren’t that popular, but are a little bit different, a little bit messed up, in a way, with Darby Scott and her friends as the main focus for the particular species of high school kid.

That wasn’t really a good way to explain this, but there is really no good way to explain this Thank you for all your comments and help, I really appreciate it!

The only real hiccup I found was that first sentence. It seemed a little long winded – maybe a comma or extend things a little more to get two sentences.

All together though, I like the way Darby and Kippling interact with each other. There is a friendly intimacy about it and the dialogue was enjoyable enough.

I must ask though… Is there going to be an over all plot, or are things going to be Darby and Friends?
