I have a small room with mustard colored walls and black contemporary furniture. I am using this room as a closet/dressing room. My style tends towards Ikea – Swedish modern/warm contemporary. I don’t have a huge budget either. I think a very light color will pop too much against the black furniture and a dark color makes the room look tiny. Also, I am trying to soften the look of the room which, along with the furniture, is very angular. Want it to look softer and more feminine, but not necessarily girly. Any ideas?

I would go a few shades lighter or darker then the wall with a wall to wall and then add a runner in black or oriental or and abstract.

Possibly not. Contemporary furniture goes with contemporary architecture, which you don’t see that often in the suburbs, even affluent ones. I have a mid-50s ranch home and have gone contemporary with it, but I’m not the norm. You’d probably be better off in a large city with a lot of lofts and apartments.

The walls are neutral light tan. The furniture is dark wood and same style as this picture. The bedding is off white. I want a neutral look that is also contemporary.

i would chose a dark color full length curtain it will be contemporary and a little dramatic..either a solid color or a large vertical stripe would add a little color and interest..i would also use curtains that have gromets or other industrial style hardware. ..look up candice olsen’s show that should give you some good ideas as well. I love the furniture from ikea and west elm but I don’t want to have to replace it in a few years because it ends up being crap. Where can I find good quality furniture that’s contemporary and trendy?

I live near Dallas so there are several local stores that sell modern/contemporary furniture. Depending on which city you live near, they too will have local contemporary furniture stores. Use Google to search for "contemporary+modern+furniture+(insert city name)" and something should come up.

FYI. Many of these stores are re-selling furniture. Meaning, they bought it at wholesale and are selling it for a higher price. If you go to a store or see an item online do some research and find out who made it (as in the brand). Look it up online and you will be surprised at how many other stores are selling the exact same piece for cheaper. I’ve done this myself as well as my mother. We have both saved a ton of money on contemporary furniture (or anything for that matter) by doing a bit of research.
