Anyone have any sites for good/unusual contemporary/modern furniture?

Posted on July 31st, 2009 by admin

ANY price range. I’m looking for a variety so I’m not seeing the same 60’s repro table 800 times on every site. Room references great too. -Some of what I need is reference and actually retail items.
Sorry, a few things to edit/add…

AND thank you but SORRY IKEA doesn’t cover it. It’s good for basic repro but I also need things a lot more "high end." (-Not trying to sound snobbish. I’m compiling a reference file but also working for a range of clients, budgets of all sorts.)
Right now I’ve exhausted the sites I have.

Here are my favorites…Room and Board is where I have bought the most furniture from but I also have pieces from these other retailers…

Throws/Pillows to match black sofas with brown furniture?

Posted on July 31st, 2009 by admin

I just bought a new living room set. Sofa, love seat and chair pictured here: http://www.globalfurnitureusa.com/popup.php?id=1147&cat_id=6&page=&contain_id=1

I would have preferred brown leather pieces, but I got a great deal on the black set. My furniture is an expresso finish. I’ve seen this paired with black leather in other furniture (chairs and bar stools) and have seen a similar table paired with a black leather set and a rust colored carpet, so I know they can worh together, but dont know how best to "marry" the brown and black pieces. I’m guessing I should use throws and pillows, but not sure what colors would be best.

The sofa, loveseat and chair are black leather. Furniture is expresso. Walls are eggshell white. Carpeting is a taupe. (this is a rental so I’d prefer not to paint the walls)

What colors would be a good choice? Any suggestions where I can buy the throws and pillows?
Just to clarify the brown expresso furniture that I’m referring isn’t another couch or chair. The expresso pieces are wooden side tables, coffee table, and a tv stand.

i think you have lots of choices with throws, candles, lamps, pillows etc. depending on the look you are trying to achieve. Red , rust, or orange would make a dramatic statement; or you could stick with a more mellow monochromatic theme and use beige and brown accents. Bright aquamarine could also work. Just experiment and see what suits you best.

What kind of bedroom furniture would go with a metal bed?

Posted on July 31st, 2009 by admin

I am getting new furniture for my bedroom, but the bed I really want is metal. What kind of (or color or whatever) furniture can I use?

I suggest something neutral with nice simple lines. Maybe a really dark brown, even black. Then you could do metal finishing pieces like drawer pulls, etc… to mimic the style of the bed. You could do metal light fixtures and a metal framed mirror to pull style from the bed too. See the sites below for ideas on accent pieces.

How should I go about getting furniture for a move to New York? Nice and cheap furniture stores in NY?

Posted on July 31st, 2009 by admin

How much should I tip the delivery men when they drop of my living room furniture?

Posted on July 31st, 2009 by admin

I ordered a two piece living room set which conisists of a Sofabed & a Loveseat(which is actually two recliners that are joined together). Anyway the delivery men will only have to carry the items up one flight of steps. Also they will have to put the furniture together once they arrive.

If the store is delivering this for you; it’s in the cost. Most people do not tip. If you’ve already settled on a price from a private company, I would only tip them if you are asking them to do something different.
*I asked them to bring down a sofa for me from a bonus room one time; I gave them $20. I always offer them something to drink as well.

I am looking for a furniture store which carries scandinavian furniture in NYCity?

where can i find designer furniture at affordable prices?

Posted on July 31st, 2009 by admin

looking at chairs for living room and a R&R couch
i’m located in singapore so local shops please. thanks all.

Chianelli Designs has many different designer furniture brands. They don’t put their prices online though. They are a discount designer furniture retailer. I’ve had great experiences with them! (Their Swaim sofas are my favorite!)

What is the best way to protect and preserve furniture (table & chairs) made out of solid European Beech wood?

Posted on July 31st, 2009 by admin

I have read wax, linseed oil, and standard Pledge will all do the job, but this is really expensive stuff that was bought at an estate sale, and nobody can seem to answer the best (and definitive) way on how to care for solid beech furniture. Thanks for your help!!!

dont use commercial sprays such as pledge, endust, etc.
personally i wouldn’t put any kind of a varnish or poly finish on the furniture, but others have with good success, however my personal choices would be a good quality beeswax furniture polish and that will give you a beautiful handrubbed glow as well as protecting the wood.
you can also use tung oil which is handrubbed into the wood and will give good protection as well.
both these methods were suggested to me by reputable furniture restoration people.
it sounds beautiful, protect it properly and you will enjoy it for years to come.
i always measure the tops of fine furniture and have glass cut and bevilled to fit the piece, thus eliminating the concerns of water rings, scratches, etc.

Do you think I can make modern furniture?

Posted on July 31st, 2009 by admin

When I look at modern furnitures they look so simple like a box or some piece of board, but it is so expensive. Do you think I can make a box and stain finish myself and say a modern furniture? Or is their more to modern furniture than just a box.
No I am not tying to sell. I wanted to put them in my house. But I was too expensive.

Making modern furniture covers a lot of ground. The most important thing to remember about the design and manufacture of modern furniture is it all about the geometry . . . . . Both in appearance and construction. Whether you can make it can only be know by you. Some people think it is easy than making a styles like Victorian or Georgian, because its so much simpler in appearance, but just the opposite is true. All you have to work with, are the lines of design and the joinery as embellishment, if something isn’t appropriate or correct, there are no curly-ques to cover for it. It just wood, joints and you . . ..

Good Luck.
